About Us

Our History

Since January 11, 1940, the National Institutes of Health Federal Credit Union (NIHFCU) has been helping its members achieve a better quality of life through financial independence. This was the vision of our founders – nine federal employees who sought a more economical alternative to banks that would help their co-workers and families meet their financial needs.

Since our start – when our founders pooled their resources (a total of $75) and began transacting business out of a shoebox – we have grown into a robust financial institution with over 40,000 members and assets of over $340 million.  Today, NIHFCU is one of Maryland’s largest credit unions.
