From Small Beginnings to Big Impact

NIH Federal Credit Union in 83 seconds

In 1940, $75 was a lot of money when 9 scientists pooled their savings to provide their co-workers and families with affordable financial choices. And so, NIHFCU was born! What began so humbly has grown into a technologically advanced and thriving financial institution.

1940

1940

On Jan. 11, NIHFCU opens in NIH Bld. 1 with 9 members and $75. By June, it had 301 members, an income of $83.49, and a net profit of $0.84!

1950

1950’s

The ’50s started with less than 1,000 members and $250K in assets. The decade ended with over 5,000 members and $1.3 million in assets.

1960

1960’s

Our 10,000th member joins NIHFCU. NIHFCU expands hours to 5 days a week, and introduces tuition loans up to $10K.

1970

1970’s

Modern technology (for the time) allows NIHFCU to do transactions in seconds. By our 35th year, NIHFCU is in the top 50 of over 25,000 credit unions nationwide.

1980

1980’s

A runaway tractor makes a visit to an NIHFCU branch. NIHFCU opens branches in local hospitals and ends the decade with almost $96 million in assets and over 22,000 members.

1990

1990’s

Two of NIHFCU’s original members celebrate our 50th anniversary. NIHFCU expands branches in NIH facilities, debuts its debit card, online banking, and bill pay services.

2000

2000’s

NIHFCU opens its current NIH Clinical Center and Rockville Metro Plaza locations. It also debuts text banking and its online mortgage system.

2010

2010’s

NIHFCU becomes an SBA lender, reaches ½ billion in assets, and debuts its smartphone apps, mobile deposit, and paperless branches in Wash. DC, NCI, and NIAID.

2020

2020’s

NIHFCU expands into Silver Spring, exceeds $800 million in assets, introduces interactive teller machines and other leading technologies.

Leadership

As a not-for-profit cooperative, the NIHFCU is owned and operated by its members. Each member has one share of ownership and one equal vote in our annual Board election.

Each year, members vote on the Board of Directors, a volunteer group of NIHFCU members responsible for the strategic direction of the credit union, including developing goals and establishing policy.
