A History of Service

Since January 11, 1940, the National Institutes of Health Federal Credit Union (NIHFCU) has been helping its members achieve a better quality of life through financial independence.

This was the vision of our founders – nine federal employees who sought a more economical alternative to banks that would help their co-workers and families meet their financial needs. Since our start – when our founders pooled their resources (a total of $75) and began transacting business out of a shoebox – we have grown to become the nation’s largest credit union serving the biomedical industry, currently providing over 40,000 members with affordable loans and banking solutions that save time and money.

Today, in addition to serving the employees and contractors of the NIH, all medical, healthcare biomedical professionals in MD, DC, VA, WV, and NC are welcome to bank with us.

At the NIHFCU, we understand the unique needs of today’s busy medical, healthcare and biomedical professionals.  Whether you are looking for healthy financial options for yourself or your business, you will find a straight-forward, fast and member-friendly solution at the NIHFCU.

As a not-for-profit financial cooperative, the NIHFCU is owned and operated by its members. This means when you deposit at the NIHFCU, you own part of the institution. This is just one way credit unions differ from for-profit banks.

Every member has one equal vote regardless of the balance in his or her savings account. Therefore, our Board of Directors is elected annually by NIHFCU members.

Board of Directors
The Board of Directors is a volunteer group elected by the membership and is responsible for the general direction of the Credit Union, including developing goals and establishing policy. The board members are dedicated individuals who are committed to ensuring a high level of service to members and to enhancing the financial position of the Credit Union. By providing a full range of financial products and exceptional service, we strive to promote the fundamental ideals of the credit union movement.
