Since 1940, we’ve proudly served the National Institutes of Health, and our NIHFCU@Work partners, primarily in the healthcare community. Today, we continue to provide banking solutions to these organizations, and any others who wish to experience “Banking with Heart.”
Almost anyone can open an account with us and it’s easy to get started!
First, check your eligibility below and then click to begin your online application.
There are four ways to qualify for NIHFCU membership. 1
Your National Institutes of Health4 affiliation (employee, contractor, fellow, volunteer, pensioner)
You are part of one of our many NIHFCU@work partner organizations4See a list of NIHFCU@Work Partners
Your family relation with a current NIHFCU member (child, sibling, parent, grandchild, grandparent, or share household responsibility)
None of these? we’ll open a free membership for you to the American Consumer Council, a non-profit Consumer Education organization. It requires no work on your part and qualifies you for NIHFCU membership immediately.
Your Social Security or Taxpayer Identification Number, proof of eligibility, and a government-issued photo ID (i.e. Driver’s license, passport, etc.) is required to complete an application.
Financial wellness begins and ends with the facts. Here’s what you need to know!
1 The NIHFCU will deposit the initial $1 required to establish your new membership. You will have the opportunity to make additional deposits upon becoming a member.
2 You must be at least age 18 for an individual membership. If you are under age 18, a parent or guardian must be a joint owner with you on the account and be an NIHFCU member.
3 For the security of your account and the Credit Union, all new accounts are verified through ChexSystems and are subject to the requirements of the Patriot Act. To help the government fight the funding of terrorism and money laundering activities, federal law requires all financial institutions to obtain, verify, and record information that identifies each person who opens an account. What this means for you: When you open an account, we will ask for your name, street address, date of birth, tax identification number and other information that will identify you. We may ask to see your driver’s license and/or other identifying documents.4 This option requires proof of affiliation (work ID, pay stub, etc.).
